Kimberly-Clark*/Ballard Medical Products* is a leader in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) diagnostics. H. pylori has been shown to cause active chronic gastritis and is a risk factor for gastric cancer and mucosal-associated-lymphoid-type (MALT) lymphoma. The eradication of H. pylori is effective in reducing or eliminating the recurrence of ulcers and may lower the risk of gastric cancer.
In 1982 Barry Marshall M.D. and Robin Warren M.D. discovered a link between H. pylori and gastric ulcers. In an effort to conveniently and accurately diagnose this bacterium, Dr. Marshall first developed the CLOtest* Rapid Urease Test (RUT) and subsequently the PYtest* 14C-Urea Breath Test (UBT).
The CLOtest detects the urease enzyme of H. pylori in gastric mucosal biopsies, while PYtest utilizes 14C labeled urea in breath samples to identify the presence of the H. pylori bacterium.
